Police are investigating a fatal stabbing in Mathare slums, Nairobi, where a 28-year-old man was killed during a violent robbery.
The victim, identified as Peter Muthama, was attacked and stabbed in the back during a struggle with suspected thugs on the evening of June 1. His body was discovered hours later lying next to a makeshift structure, long after the assailants had fled the scene.
Muthama’s death adds to a string of violent robberies reported in the city in recent weeks. His body was transferred to the morgue for autopsy as detectives pursue leads on the gang responsible for the attack.
Police continue to urge members of the public to avoid confrontation during robberies. “Some attackers operate under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and any resistance can provoke deadly violence,” a senior officer advised.
In a related development, a gang arrested in Nakuru has been linked to a recent wave of violent crimes, including the murder of a 23-year-old shop attendant in Kaptembwo, Soilo area. The victim, Duncan Elias Mwambili, was shot in the stomach on May 30 after confronting three armed robbers who had stormed his place of work.
Mwambili succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. Three 7.6mm×39 spent cartridges were recovered at the crime scene, where the suspects reportedly used an unmarked motorcycle to escape.
According to police sources, at least seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbery. They are also being investigated for their involvement in four other murder cases in the region.
The suspects were nabbed on Monday, just hours after allegedly killing a police officer in an ambush in Nakuru’s Free Area. Two additional officers sustained gunshot wounds during the same attack and are recovering.
An AK-47 rifle recovered from the suspects is undergoing ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in previous attacks.
Authorities say the suspects will be charged with murder and robbery with violence once investigations are concluded.
