Prominent Kenyan activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi was arrested on Saturday, July 19, at his home in Lukenya, Machakos County, in connection with investigations into the facilitation of terrorist activities during the nationwide protests held on June 25, 2025.
According to law enforcement sources, detectives recovered two mobile phones, a laptop, and several notebooks during the arrest.
Mwangi was later escorted by investigators to his office at Mageuzi Hub on Rose Avenue in Hurlingham, Nairobi, where a search yielded additional items, including:
Nine assorted external hard drives
Two laptops
Company seals for Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd
A company stamp
Six cheque books
Stamp duty documents
Two unused tear gas canisters
One 7.62mm blank round

In Police Custody
Mwangi is currently being held at Pangani Police Station, where he is undergoing formal processing. He is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, July 21, to face charges related to the facilitation of terrorist activities and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the nature of the allegations or whether others are being investigated in connection with the same case.
Ongoing Investigation
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of organizers and participants in the June 25 protests, which drew national and international attention. Law enforcement agencies have maintained that they are pursuing leads involving individuals suspected of coordinating or supporting criminal elements during the demonstrations.
Mwangi’s legal team has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the arrest or the items recovered during the search.
