Massive Fire Guts Gikomba Market Footwear Section

A massive fire broke out early this morning at the Gikomba Market, engulfing the footwear section near Lamu Road in Majengo, Pumwani. The inferno, which started at around 3:00 AM, has sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky and caused panic among traders and residents.

Firefighters from the Nairobi County fire department are currently on the scene, working tirelessly to contain the flames. Local volunteers have joined in the rescue efforts, forming water chains and salvaging goods where possible.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions from within the burning stalls, likely caused by gas cylinders or stored chemicals. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but authorities have launched an investigation.

Gikomba Market, one of East Africa’s largest open-air markets, has seen repeated fire incidents over the years—many traders now fear this blaze could result in yet another devastating loss of livelihood.

No casualties have been reported so far, but emergency responders remain on high alert as they battle to prevent the fire from spreading further.
