Nairobi, May 18, 2025 – Five Nairobi County government employees are being held at Riruta Police Station following their arrest over allegations of damaging property at a local entertainment spot.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Iddy Augustine, Jeffrey Obado, Newton Kimani, Philip Kilili, and Sharon Mwikali. They were reportedly involved in an incident that left a television screen cracked, prompting swift action from police officers.
Arrest Sparks Public Debate
Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi raised the alarm on social media, alleging that the arrest was arbitrary and lacked due process. According to Mwangi, the arrest happened shortly after midnight and was reportedly ordered by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) without thorough investigation.
“They called me past midnight, and I informed Geoffrey Mosiria,” Mwangi posted, adding that the incident may be reflective of a larger issue of abuse of power and poor accountability practices.
Mixed Reactions from Kenyans
The public response has been divided. Some Kenyans applauded the arrests, citing long-standing frustrations with the conduct of Nairobi County officers, popularly known as kanjo. Others called for due process and fair treatment for the accused.
While the exact details of the property damage incident are still under investigation, the case has reignited discussions around accountability, professionalism, and police conduct in Nairobi County enforcement operations.
