Dar es Salaam, 21 May 2025 — Kenyan digital strategist and Nairobi County Assembly Member, Robert Alai, has issued a stern warning to activist Boniface Mwangi, cautioning him against confronting Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), during a recent appearance in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking after Mwangi allegedly made bold remarks at Serena Hotel, invoking the popular slogan “haki yangu” in protest against what he termed political injustice, Alai urged caution, describing CCM as a deeply entrenched and formidable political force.
“He doesn’t know what he’s dealing with,” Alai stated. “Beware what you are dealing with while in Tanzania. CCM is a monster built from Africa’s independence movement.”
He warned that CCM, which has ruled Tanzania since 1961 and evolved from the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) and TANU, is more dangerous than Uganda’s NRM under President Yoweri Museveni.
Alai recalled how Ugandan authorities held Kenyan human rights activist Alamin Kimathi and others for over a year without trial and suggested that dissenters in Tanzania could face even worse outcomes.

“You can easily be killed, and those who cheer you on won’t mourn you for more than a week,” Alai cautioned. “Remember the words of the magistrate you people mocked and trolled. He gave the best brotherly advice to Boniface Mwangi.”
Alai emphasized that CCM’s control runs deep through every public institution in Tanzania, with many private corporations also operating under strict constraints. He called it a “monster” of governance built over decades of authoritarian and nationalist ideals.
“Only foreign fools dare CCM in Tanzania,” he concluded.
Boniface Mwangi, known for his fearless activism and criticism of political elites, has not publicly responded to Alai’s warning as of the time of publication.
