Trans Nzoia, May 19, 2025 — Tensions escalated in Trans Nzoia County as angry youth vandalized vehicles belonging to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The protest erupted following an attempted arrest of Governor George Natembeya, who has been vocal in opposing the current national government policies.
The youth accused the government of weaponizing state agencies to target political opponents, especially Governor Natembeya, a known critic of Deputy President William Ruto. The supporters deflated tires of police and agency vehicles and blocked officers from executing the arrest.
Locals expressed frustration over what they perceive as increasing repression and unfair political persecution, warning that Kenya risks sliding into authoritarianism reminiscent of neighboring Uganda or Tanzania.

“This is a fight against injustice and an abuse of power by state agencies used as political tools,” said one protester.
Governor Natembeya has previously claimed that his opposition to certain government agendas has made him a target for harassment and intimidation.

Authorities have condemned the destruction of government property and vowed to maintain law and order while respecting citizens’ right to peaceful protest.
The situation remains tense as the standoff between security officers and residents continues.
